Use the arrows at the bottom to page through the tutorial. :)

This is the process I went through for painting "Lord of the Earth" (full version here: [link] ).

I should note that it's rare that I paint quite the same way twice, so while this is one way I've painted an image, it's not how I *always* do it. (There are, of course, many ways to go about it, and I think you miss out if you just do it one way all the time.)

I'm happy to answer any questions if I can! Hope this is helpful!

I think for this one I used just the basic hard round brush with the opacity and size controlled by my tablet pressure. There was probably some soft round brush used for things also, like the sky. :)

Did you use any photo reference for this? I find that I really can't paint out of my head, and I always need photos to help with light and color. If it's out of your head, do you have any tips on how to paint like that?

In this particular painting, I don't believe I did. I do on occasion look at reference when I'm trying to be accurate or perhaps "more natural" about what I'm painting. :)

It's really a matter of observing and drawing a lot of things from life. Then when you go to paint something and don't have reference with you, you draw on your *experience* to know how to go about painting something.

Good luck! Just keep drawing everything!! :)

Wow this is amazing! What do you draw with? A bamboo tablet? Photoshop cs4 or cs5, corel draw? I'm wondering because I'm thinking about getting one of these programs.

I use a Wacom Intuos 3 tablet with Photoshop CS5 :)

Photoshop and Painter are the best, though I usually stick to Photoshop.

Good luck!

I believe I used only default brushes for this. My custom brush days didn't come until a few years after, as I recall!

This is amazing! It really felt like I was painting with you when you were working because it was interactive and had so many update photos.
Half of the time i didn't even notice what you were doing and had to go back because I was like

... why did that change? It was so goo- Wow, it got even better! HOWDO!?

but yes, very very helpful. Did you do all the colours on one layer and the different layers were for your water/sky/clouds/etc. or did everything get it's own layer?
Reply
:iconkrazykrista:
krazykrista Featured By Owner Nov 2, 2010
If I remember right, I think this piece had a lot of layers--and I probably even made them when I wasn't sure if what I intended to do would bring about a good result. (Easy erasing that way!)That said, not everything had its own layer, or needed it. :)

Glad you found the tutorial helpful!
