Artist's Comments

This was a speedpainting from several months ago. I believe it was around 45 minutes or so.

Photoshop CS2 + Wacom Intuos

Critiques

:icondonnaquinn:
I love it overall. I'm a sucker for desert scenes, and this fits the bill admirably. As far as originality is concerned, it's hard to make such a seemingly simple scene look "original" because "solitary guy on outcropping in desert" has probably been done a hundred times before. However, the strong shadows that really seem to anchor the picture to the bottom, and the bold sweep of rock, I feel, make for quite an original composition.
Colours are great. The red obviously contrasts nicely with the blue sky (nice choice of blue, by the way), and the tones are very effective too in drawing the eye to the figure.
The only criticisms I have are: a) I think a little more space at the top would be good as to me the figure looks slightly hemmed-in by the top edge. Others may not have this same problem though; I think it's probably something that would depend on the viewer; and b) I find the signature in the bottom-right a little distracting (but talk about nit-picking!).
Lovely work with great contrasts between sun and shadow, and the concentration of colour to the top really helps make the figure pop.

None intended, no...just trying to learn how to do a good speedpainting. :)

Then excellent work my friend. :) Might you be able to point me in the direction of a speed painting tutorial or information?
:iconkrazykrista:
Hah, you guys are going to beat me down with this aren't you?! (This isn't the first request for one that I've gotten...in the last two days :fear:

I need to figure out how I'm doing these first...I don't really have a method...i just slop colors on in scribbles until it looks like what was in my head :)

I will certainly post a link in my journal if I do make one though. The request has been noted! :)

Sweet deal :) (that "slop colors on in scribbles until it looks like what was in my head" is great info btw. I'll definately have to try that.) +Watch woot!

with this one pretty much everything is right. you've got scale, colours and atmosphere down, and the figure rounds this up nicely and gives it some life. I think my only nitpick is that behind the shadow tings are getting depth-blurred too quickly. like the shadow was some sort of barrier. I think some tightening up there and perhaps a midground object would help with that. that's my only critique though.
well done
